Intro to Herbalism with Claudia Nagy

Intro to Herbalism with Claudia Nagy

A healthy, mature forest ecosystem provides far more than just timber value; it functions as an intricate natural pharmacy packed with unique native plants that have supported human health for centuries. For landowners looking to expand their knowledge beyond standard tree identification, Mountain Top Arboretum is hosting a special field session on traditional woodland herbalism. Guided by expert field botanist Claudia Nagy, this indoor and outdoor workshop explores the historical applications, safety guidelines, and biology of regional forest flora.

The session begins with an educational walk through the woods to locate and identify valuable native plants, including wild ginger, ginseng, witch hazel, and various forest mushrooms. Claudia will demonstrate how to recognize these species in late September as they shift toward dormancy, explaining how to spot subtle root formations, seed heads, and bark textures. Participants will learn about the historical uses of these plants by native communities and early settlers, along with the ethical harvesting practices necessary to keep wild populations from being over-exploited. The group will then head inside the arboretum workshop to learn the basics of processing roots and infusing barks. This workshop offers a fantastic opportunity to discover non-timber forest products that you can sustainably tend and harvest right in your own home woodlot.
